Cantonese Slang of the Week: The Peanut Guy

Made-up vocabulary only known to locals, words that consist of a mix of both English and Chinese, and double-entendres that make absolutely no sense – these are just a few of the things that make Cantonese one of the hardest languages to learn. So, we thought it was about time we gave you folks a quick lesson on some funny terminology, common phrases, and the latest Internet slang. We guarantee it will score you a few extra points with the locals!

Peanut Guy | "Faa Sung Yau"

Ever seen a couple arguing loudly on the street? Angry passengers fighting on the MTR? You don't want to get involved, but you just can't stop looking to see what happens next, right? Well congratulations, you have officially become a Faa Sang Yau! Similar to when you see your classmates get into a fight, or when a heated argument takes off in the comments section on Facebook, a Faa Sang Yau loves to watch somewhat dramatic, yet entertaining situations unfold.

Example: "John is such a Faa Sang Yau, he loves it whenever he sees a drunk girl screaming and throwing fries at her boyfriend in McDonald's at 3am."
