Ancient myth tells a story of when mankind and nature (Shizezn) was harmonious. Man’s love for nature grew so deep they learned how to honour it through their craftsmanship (Rikisaku). Washi Jean’s latest collection “The Life on Earth” is inspired by this beautiful myth. Founder and designer Hiro Yoshikawa spent over a decade’s time developing Washi No.6 yarn by using materials from nature. The resulting fabric is light as leaves and strong as roots, cold in the summer and warm in the winter. The design of the collection is inspired by the changing scenes of nature, which results in creating two lines —“Shizen” and “Rikisaku”—to pay homage to our mother earth.

Jointly created and presented by Washi Jeans, Botanic Union, and Alex Lam @Lefishtank, “The Life on Earth” exhibition opens at the Botanic Union in Lam Tsuen, Tai Po, from now to 11 July. Designed to be an immersive journey for guests to experience the latest collection cultivated by Hiro Yoshikawa, Botanic Union has been transformed from a secluded greenhouse into a denim oasis constructed with Washi denim fabric.

To unveil the prelude to the exhibition, the first thing that comes to visitors’ sight at the entrance is a beetle car with the Washi “Shizen” tent installation behind it. Then, visitors will enter into the core installation space where a few key styles from the lines of “Shizen” and “Rikisaku” collections have been featured through the immersive journey of plants. The end of the main exhibition space will lead visitors into the final area where all will see the Washi “Rikisaku” tree installation.

Besides the exhibition, Washi Jean collaborated with Botanic Union and Le fishtank to debut the “The Life on Earth” collection through a fashion/art experimental theatre show—“Washi Life on Earth—Backstage,” with Alex Lam from Le fishtank being the music director of the show, Soto and Sam from Botanic Union as the Show stylist and show director respectively. This tripartite team worked on different stage elements to engage the audience to the most extent, leading them to fully immerse in the experience in a first-person angle and visualize the brand and its new collection.
