PHOTOS: Old and New Collide in Stunning Photos of Hong Kong

By Sophie Pettit 21 January 2016
When English teacher and food blogger Laura Williams isn't busy marking homework or whipping up a storm in the kitchen, she's strolling the streets of Hong Kong snapping left, right, and centre with her trusty Canon G15 Snapshot. Like many of us, Williams has been captivated by our city's intriguing culture and the juxtaposition of old and new which can be found on almost every street you walk down. Her latest collection of photography beautifully captures the contrasting worlds of traditional and modern Hong Kong through ordinary moments we encounter every day. "I think it's almost impossible to take a bad photograph in Hong Kong," she tells Localiiz. "This city oozes culture and history, and walking around I constantly find myself being taken aback by the beauty of a harbour view, the mishmash of neon signs that light the way down a narrow, bustling side street, and the crooked, cobbled streets lined with stalls and market traders proudly selling their wares. I can’t help but capture these moment with my camera." You might think that Hong Kong's tendency for drizzly days makes it difficult to capture the city in all its glory, but Williams couldn't disagree more. "Nearly all of my photographs were taken on a particularly grey and drizzly day," she tells us. "I prefer these days to photograph as the lighting can create a moody and dramatic feel. To me Hong Kong is one of the best places in the world - come rain or shine!" Well we can't argue with that!
