In a busy, frantic city like Hong Kong, sometimes just catching your breath can feel like a struggle, but tucked away on the quaint island of Peng Chau, the tiny antique store and cafe, Sun Sat Store, hopes to provide a place of respite for city-dwellers and island residents alike.
Tucked away on the south side of Peng Chau’s harbour, the small, yellow-gated antique store, which is named after the days it is open – Saturday and Sunday – sells everything from vintage collectables to consigned local handicrafts.
The young owners, Kit and June, moved to Peng Chau from the city after falling in love with the island’s tranquility and slow lifestyle. They converted the front of their home to an antique store, selling flea market treasures collected from trips around the world, as well as local handicrafts they discovered around town. Curious passersby can easily spend hours exploring interesting items such as toy sewing machines from England, soaps made out of mandarin, and vintage medicine boxes from Japan.
Apart from being an antique shop, Sun Sat Store is also a cafe, offering simple coffee, green tea, toast, and cha guo – a sweet Cantonese tea cake – made at Peng Chau’s local bakery, as well as second-hand books for customers to enjoy with their food. So, if you’re planning a trip to the quaint little island anytime soon, we highly recommend you swing by and browse the hidden gems on offer. You can also keep up to date with the store on Facebook and Instagram, where Kit and June regularly post (in Cantonese) about their latest vintage offerings as well as musings on Peng Chau life.
