Waste Not, Want Not – Your Guide to Zero-Waste Shopping in Hong Kong

From water bottles to polystyrene packaging, to the plastic wrap that clings to fruit and veg in supermarket aisles, single-use plastics are wreaking havoc in Hong Kong, and household waste accounts for more than two-thirds of this. With more than 900 million bottles being used each year, this pandemic is in need of a solution, and quickly. Enter Hong Kong’s zero-waste stores – from bulk bought grains and staples to package-free alternatives, to home and beauty supplies, these are the stores that will clear your conscience and your carbon footprint in one fell swoop.

Live Zero

Live Zero is a zero-waste, small neighbourhood grocer that focuses on selling bulk-bought staples and grains, home goods, and reusable cups and containers. Run by small business owner Tamsin Thornburrow (who also runs nearby lifestyle and furniture store, Thorn & Burrow), Live Zero has since expanded with an outlet in Sai Kung due to popular demand.

Ecologically-conscious Edgar specialises in sourcing organic, fair-trade produce. Encouraging consumers to save the planet and help themselves in the process (with health-conscious produce in store), visitors are encouraged to bring their own containers and jars to cut down on packaging, and stock-up on their staples direct from the large-scale dispensers in store at the K11 Art Mall and Star Street Precinct shops.

Online platform No!w No Waste sells products that aid a zero-waste lifestyle. It specialises in starter kits for those looking to play their part, but are unsure where to begin. Founder Fanny Moritz is motivated by a desire to help Hongkongers make environmentally-conscious decisions, stay healthy, and save money while they’re at it. With ethically sourced, plastic-free, recyclable goods, this is one place guaranteed to help you – quite literally – pick up the tools of the trade.

Organic We

Founded in 2013, Organic We caters to the city’s conscious consumers. In a district surrounded by neon lights and a hectic environment, the store shuns pre-fab life and opts instead for a slower pace of life. Products are sold with reduced packaging, and the store places an emphasis on environmental and animal-friendly items that range from food and pantry staples to makeup, pet supplies, and hygiene and personal goods.

In the heart of Sai Kung, eco-conscious grocery store Seed encourages visitors to bring their own containers, but they do have reusables in store for last-minute grocery shopping. The store sources locally grown groceries and environmentally-friendly products from artisans (including soaps and skincare products). They even cater to your four-legged friends, and recently ran a giveaway for free dog food on their Facebook page!
