The Best Art Galleries in Hong Kong

Culture vultures rejoice, because Hong Kong is home to a wide range of art galleries, displaying everything from classic works of art to photographic prints, to the latest in contemporary trends. In recent years, the city has earned itself a position as a firm fixture on the international art circuit – with prestigious annual art fairs taking up residence, and a whole host of galleries representing the best in international and local talent. Spoiled for choice? We’ve put together a list of the best to help you narrow it down.

Ben Brown Fine Arts

The eponymous gallery was opened by former Sotheby’s director Ben Brown, with a focus on showcasing the works of contemporary artists. With prestigious addresses in London’s Mayfair and Hong Kong’s Pedder Building, Ben Brown Fine Arts has hosted exhibitions by notable artists including Gavin Turk, Vik Muniz, and conceptual photographer Candida Hofer, who captures the interiors of iconic and historic spaces.

AO Vertical Art Space

This arts space is one of the most unconventional in the city, and one we’d advise wearing comfortable shoes to. Spread across the stairwell from the first to 14th floors of a commercial building, AO Vertical Art Space displays privately collected artworks in a unique setting that allows you to view the pieces from an entirely new perspective.

One of the galleries that make up the burgeoning arts hub in Wong Chuk Hang, this contemporary gallery initially focused on photography, but has since branched out to display video art, installations, and more. Focusing on emerging and established artists in Hong Kong, Blindspot Gallery hosts frequent group and solo exhibitions.

M+ Pavilion

Ahead of the long-awaited opening of M+, the M+ Pavilion welcomed visitors through its doors in 2016. An architectural feat, the building itself is a work of art, and well worth visiting for the exteriors alone. It continues to host art exhibitions, seminars, and events, and current exhibitors include Danh Vo, whose works were showcased at White Cube in 2016.
