RESTAURANT OPENING: SAMA Soup Curry & Cafe

Fancy a bit of a kick with your soup? Then new Japanese restaurant SAMA may be just your place now that it is officially open (soft opening was mid-October). Tucked away in quiet and trendy Gough Street, this little joint boasts the most colourful and tantilising Sapporo-style soup curries you will likely taste in Hong Kong. Why? Because you get to make them exactly how you want.

Diners can customise their own soup curry by selecting their desired soup curry base and meat, and choose the level of spiciness too from a scale of 1 to 30. Each hotness level is represented by 3 bear characters, Baby Bear (Level 0-5), Adult Bear (Level 6-15), and Crazy Bear (Level 16-30) and each curry comes with a serving of rice or udon and a complimentary second refill (with the option to add additional toppings such as vegetables, eggs, tempura, and meaty treats.)

Aside from the curries, the menu boasts an impressive, (and at times bizarre), range of appetisers, from Otaru Crumbed Oysters and Tempura Taraba Crab Legs, to Shishitou Brussel Sprouts and Hokkaido Popcorn.

The drinks menu may surprise you, as you can pick a Japanese beer, Hitachino White Ale, IPA, Sweet Stout, Classic Ale, Ginger Ale, and Pale Ale, or opt for a cooling yoghurt drink, Lassi in Classic, Strawberry, Pineapple or Mango.

The dishes are extremely filling and the prices very reasonable, curries range from $88-$128, depending on how ravenous you are. And if you can’t get enough of that curry goodness and want to recreate it at home, the restaurant offers easy-to-make curries in microwavable pouches for just $65.

Address: 51A Gough Street
