‘Healthy’ and ‘curry’ aren’t words you tend to hear in the same sentence, but delightful new Indian takeaway Masala Train has cracked the formula with a menu of delicious homemade traditional dishes that are free from artificial sweeteners, excess salt and MSG – and an expensive price tag.
When it comes to world cuisine, we’re pretty spoilt for choice in Hong Kong. Japanese, Italian, Korean – you name it, we’ve got it. Indian food, however, is somewhat lacking on the island, and unless we fancy taking a trip over to Kowloon City or Chungking Mansions to get our spicy fix, we have to opt for an alternative. So when news hit that a brand new Indian takeaway has opened up in the heart of Wan Chai, we couldn’t wait to swing by and get stuck into some hot dishes – and we’re very glad we did.
Tucked away on the corner of Wan Chai MTR Exit A1, this delicious haven is small enough that you might miss it – but make sure you don’t. Boasting a selection of mouthwatering homemade curries, keema rolls, sides, and guilt-free desserts (with zero sugar), the casual eatery will definitely keep you – and your wallet – extremely satisfied. The only catch is that there is only seating for about four people, so it’s definitely better as a takeaway or Deliveroo option.
The best thing about this tasty gem, apart from the incredibly reasonable prices – a Chicken Tikka Masala with rice and salad will only set you back $58 – is the fact that every dish is high in protein and fibre and contains no artificial sweeteners or excess salt or MSG which we usually associate with takeaway food. Healthy eating is definitely a selling point here – there’s even a generously sized Protein Platter ($78) of Chicken, Lamb, and Paneer Tikka on a bed of salad for diners who want to avoid carbs and go for a lighter option.
The very mild Chicken Curry ($58) and Lamb Keema Roll ($68) were our favourites, mainly because of the gorgeous texture of the fall-apart-in-your-mouth minced lamb and the subtle flavours of the curry sauce which you could tell had no nasty fake ingredients. The fact that we could specify how much spice we wanted in the keema roll was an added bonus.
For sides, the devilishly good Samosas and Falafel with mint dip (both a bargain $30) are a must order, and make a great snack if you don’t have enough room for a curry. Those with a sweet tooth will no doubt enjoy a pot of Gajar Halwa (Carrot Pudding) or creamy Kheer (Rice Pudding) which cost a mere $25 each. The Gajar Halwa was our personal favourite, packed full of juicy, grated carrot and subtle spices. Be warned though, this is filling, so leave enough room after your main – you’ll thank us.
Essentially, this is one of the healthiest, most satisfying, and most generously priced casual eateries you will find in Wan Chai. It’s also open late on Friday and Saturday nights which means we no longer have to rely on a greasy Ebeneezer’s to soak up the alcohol after a night on the town. Whatever you order though, just make sure to pick up a cup of sweet and spicy Masala Chai to end your Indian feast – it’s seriously good!
