So next time you're looking to stock up your cupboards, why not think beyond the big department stores such as Sogo, Wing On, Jusco, and IKEA and check out these little gems?

Shanghai Street (aka Kitchen Street)

shanghai Aptly nicknamed Kitchen Street, Shanghai Street has everything you could possibly need to stock up your kitchen cupboards. A few minutes walk from Yau Ma Tei MTR station and you will stumble upon piles upon piles of inexpensive kitchenware at the rows of shops dotted along this street. From chopping boards and knives to novelty cutters, jelly moulds, and retro cake tins at rock-bottom prices (under $20), you can almost get lost in this Aladdin's cave of culinary wonders. Chan Chi Kee, Man Kee Chopping Board, and I Love Cake are among the highlights in this baker’s paradise, offering all the essential utensils as well as speciality items including bamboo dim-sum baskets, Japanese tea ware, cake-making equipment, and fondu sets. There are also shelves of cooking ingredients, ranging from flour and icing sugar, to food dyes and decorative sprinkles, so you can get super colourful and creative in the kitchen. Most shops open from 10am to 7pm and offer prices that are arguably the cheapest in the city. Well worth a look if you're planning on stocking up and bulk buying.
