If the hump day blues are getting you down, and the dreary weekend forecast is simply compounding the problem, now is the perfect time to browse the biggest, best, and most exciting events our city has in store this weekend. With food festivals, stunning musical performances, and family fun days dotted around the city, it's set to be yet another jam-packed weekend.


Books for Love

Books for LOve If you're on the hunt for your next good book, or looking to reignite your love of reading, then head down to Taikoo Place for the annual Books for Love $10 charity book sale, where you'll have over 100,000 donated titles to choose from! Little bookworms can join in a series of free, interactive storytelling workshops courtesy of Shakespeare4All, TEBie, and The Boys' and Girls' Association of Hong Kong (BGCA). Plus, all proceeds will go to BGCA to create more educational opportunities for children in need. Can you help them smash last year's fundraising total of $510,000? Sure you can! Fringe Club Events

The Fringe Club

The Fringe Club is bursting at the seams this weekend! Kicking off the action is the Asian premier of John and Jen, a two-person musical performed off-Broadway in 1995 and 2015. Watch Sarah Martin and Nathan Koval (pictured above) bring to life this emotional exploration of sibling relationships against the backdrop of 1950s to 1990s America. Encore! 

Learn about all things jazz with the Big Bad Jazz workshop, courtesy of expert Sinclair Ang. History, live performances, hands on activities, and a swinging party to round it all off - there's no doubt toes will be tapping this Saturday at the Fringe Dairy.

So you've mastered the art of playing jazz music, but how are your vintage moves? The Learn to Dance in a Day workshop will cover the basics of Swing, the Charleston, and the Lindy Hop over the course of three hours. Can't find a partner? Not a problem. You'll be paired up on the day.

On the Rooftop Republic rooftop, nutritionist Tanja Guigon-Rech will be explaining why fad diets don't work and how to eat healthily even when your stress levels are off the chart in her We Are What We Eat Nutrition Talk. With summer just over the horizon, now is the perfect time to kick your healthy eating plan into action!

A Tale of Two Cities: Blood For Blood

2 cities blood for blood From comedy to crisis, British theatre director and playwright Jonathan Holloway's much-anticipated production of A Tale of Two Cities: Blood For Blood looks set to wow audiences this weekend. Originally set during the French Revolution, Holloway has reworked the Dickensian tale as a 21st century exploration of grief, self-sacrifice, and loss. A packet of tissues might be a good idea for this one guys! Country of Origin Trail Run

country of origian Feeling patriotic? To celebrate our city's diverse mix of nationalities, teams of three hailing from the same nation will complete a 30km course around the picturesque island of Lantau. Competitors will gather at Mui Wo Pier for an 8am start, with three food and water pit stops along the way. In the spirit of patriotism and unity, teams must stick together and cross the finish line as a unit. The deadline for registration is Friday - good luck everyone! Restaurant app FeedMe Guru will be showcasing 11 of Hong Kong's most delicious cafés and restaurants, supported by Justina R, every Saturday afternoon for the next eight weeks. From Korean Fried Chicken courtesy of Central hangout Moyo, to the experimental Liquid Nitrogen Popcorn of Zuc.cch.ero, prepare yourself for a seriously mouth-watering day at the Alley Street Food Market. Guru Notes are the designated currency, with one Guru Note equating to $10 and dishes costing between four and ten Guru Notes apiece.

Make sure you save some room for the first ever LKF Street Food Festival. Over 50 local and international street food vendors, including Stacks Ice Cream and Common Room, will be rustling up an irresistible array of dishes whilst musicians, dancers, jugglers, and magicians dazzle you with their performances. Entry to the market is free, however if you're planning to tuck into the tasty treats on offer, it might well be worth bagging yourself a voucher book worth over $1,000 - for $188 online, or $220 on the door.

With an impressive track record of sell-out Southside Markets (pictured above) under its belt, The April Southside Market looks set to continue the trend. This time around, an estimated 400 guests will enjoy a delicious buffet lunch courtesy of host restaurant, The Butchers Club, and other selected vendors. Face painters, games on the lawn, and an al fresco rooftop cinema will keep little ones entertained, so you can make the most of the free-flow bar and check out the local business stalls.

Tannhäuser

tannhauser Under the guidance of conductor James Levine, a talented cast of operatic singers will bring Tannhäuser to life this weekend, as it returns to the Wellcome Theatre for the first time in over a decade. Crafted by German composer and operatic master, Richard Wagner, this five hour-long musical masterpiece follows the plight of a young knight torn between love and passion. International club DJ and producer, DJ Katch, will be taking to the decks in Central nightclub, Boujis, for a night of massive music anthems. His trademark hit, The Horns, has already claimed the Number one spot in the Billboard Club charts, but that's not all he'll be bringing to the floor. With golden albums and international chart topping hits under his producing belt, DJ Katch knows exactly how to make the crowd go wild.

Clean Up Our Own Backyard Hong Kong!

Clean Up Your Own Backyard HK UPDATE: In light of the rather dreary weather forecast, this event has been postponed until May 1. Save the date!  Join litter-warrior, jet pilot, and keen hiker Lachlan 'Locky' Lawford as he cleans up waste and rubbish tainting the picturesque Golden Coast area of So Kwan Wat. With high hopes that similar events will follow, Clean Up Our Own Backyard Hong Kong! has been organised in association with goldcoastonline.hk and with the help of Tuen Mun and Southern District Councillors. Lawford is passionate about bringing the continuing problem of illegal waste disposal into the spotlight and educating adults and children about the importance of looking after our environment. If you can't make it this weekend but still want to help out, donations of litter bags and rubber gloves would be greatly appreciated! La Feria de Abril at La Paloma

La Paloma The trendy neighbourhood of Sai Ying Pun is getting a Spanish makeover this weekend in celebration of the annual Seville Fair (aka La Feria de Abril). In collaboration with the Spanish Chamber of Commerce, this Spanish fiesta looks set to be a truly delicious affair, with La Paloma serving up speciality dishes such as paella, croquettes, and churros - all washed down with a traditional glass of Tío Pepe sherry. Flamenco dancers will be dazzling guests while a range of hands-on workshops keep little hands entertained.
