VIDEO: Gov Issues Cyber Security Reminder After Lawmaker Loses $500k in Email Hack

By Brian Adams 6 February 2015
The Hong Kong government has issued a video urging residents to be vigilant against cyber attacks after a lawmaker lost $500,000 in an email hack. The Information Services Department posted the video on YouTube after former security chief and current Legislative Council member, Regina Ip, shared details of the attack. The hack, Ip recounted involved an email from the MTR Corporation chairman asking her to open an attachment. "Regina, I need help. Urgent. Please open the attachment." The legislator says she later received an email saying that the chairman's account had been hacked, but by that time she had already opened the email. Earlier this week she discovered that $500,000 had been transferred from her account. The video, below, urges residents to be aware of their vulnerabilities online, never open unknown documents, don't share personal information freely online, and to use a variety of passwords across online accounts.
