As beautiful as this video is visually, it will burrow in to your eardrums with its distorted and erratic, jazz-like soundtrack. Created by Hong Kong based documentary filmmaker and cinematographer
Adam Ruszkowski, it pays tribute to the buzzing, chaotic, and maddening energy of our city.
"I have been thinking of the time lapse technique for a while now, trying to use it in Hong Kong to emphasise the fast pace of the city, it's nervousness and frantic crowds," he told us. "I think it works well with Hong Kong's endless flux of people, impermanence of the city's social reality. Time lapse allows viewers to perceive reality from the outside as if they were meditating and observing time-flow itself. Location becomes time.
"My idea was to confront this stream of spatial time with feelings of anxiety and alienation and that's where the music came in. The music here expresses an internal landscape which is impulsive, rough, and detached. I didn't want to go for city sounds, I imagined silence and fast crowds. Silence makes these crowds unreal, it dissolves them into a collage, a moving wallpaper of faces and images."
Perhaps the score is a good fit then if there is no melody for the madness in Hong Kong.
