Will Twitter’s New Hong Kong Office Peck Away at China Ban?

By Localiiz 10 March 2015
Screen Shot 2015-03-10 at 12.21.44 pmTwitter opened up an office in Hong Kong today, posting two positions to its website. This is a bold step for the San Francisco-based micro-blogger who may be looking for a foothold in Hong Kong as a first step to loosening a 2009 ban on its services in Mainland China. This past November, Twitter stated they would open a Hong Kong office in the first quarter of 2015. The Hong Kong office joins other regional offices including Singapore, Tokyo, Sydney, and Seoul. The social media platform is hoping to fill two Mandarin speaking marketing roles, with no mention of proficiency in Cantonese, including an account executive and a media partnership manager for the “Greater China” region. The managerial role in particular looks to focus on the entertainment industry listing a “deep knowledge of the entertainment landscape, including significant and direct experience with agents, managers, publicists, and media companies” in the posting. Twitter currently reports having 288 million monthly active users sending 500 million Tweets are sent per day. Roughly 77% of Twitter accounts are outside the U.S. with the platform supporting 33 languages.
