“Triad Style” Editor Attack Rocks Hong Kong

By Localiiz 27 February 2014
February 27th 2014 Our thoughts go out to recently ousted Ming Pao editor Kevin Lau Chun-to, who is fighting for his life in hospital after a meat cleaver attack that sent shock waves through Hong Kong yesterday. The 49-year-old received deep gashes to his back and legs when a motorbike passenger, still wearing his helmet, dismounted and slashed at him in a residential area on Wednesday (February 26th) morning.

Police have not revealed a motive for the attack, but it has been described as a “classic Triad hit” by sources. Lau is currently in critical condition following an operation on a 16cm-long knife wound on his back. Lau was dismissed as editor of Ming Pao last month and replaced by a Malaysian journalist with little editorial experience, prompting concerns about press freedom in the territory. The paper was known for its “aggressive reporting” of human rights abuses and corruption in China.

We wish Lau a speedy recovery and our thoughts are with his family.
