Ticket to Read: Devoted Dad Creates Hong Kong Story Book for Transport-Obsessed Son

July 16th 2014 Once upon a time, a three-year-old boy became fascinated by the cars, buses, taxis, trams, trains, trucks and ferries of Hong Kong. When his devoted dad couldn’t find a book on the nature of his son’s obsession, he did what any self-respecting, literary-capable father would do - he wrote one himself. And they all lived happily ever after! Following a young boy named Tim Chan as he chases his mischievous dog from Hong Kong Park to Sai Kung, Matthew Cooper’s delightful children’s book Lost In Hong Kong shines a spotlight on the city’s many recognisable landmarks and varied forms of transportation. With the help of gorgeous illustrations from Fiona Lai, the recently released book, packed with innocence and intrigue, is one we instantly fell in love with here at Localiiz. Speaking about his inspiration, Matthew said, “I’d always thought Hong Kong was such a diverse, amazing place where you could do so many things in one day - from ice-skating in a mall in the morning, to heading out on a junk in the afternoon, to eating street food in the evening. When I had kids I assumed that there would be books for them that were set in this interesting world.” Finding no such thing however, Matthew, a former medical writer, set to the task himself. The result was this charming little tale, and probably the happiest little boy in town. Want to know how the story ends? Matthew’s just not telling! “It’s easy to imagine that anything could happen in this place where you have green hills in a stand-off with skyscrapers on Hong Kong Island, feral cows stopping the traffic in Sai Kung, and sleepy islands just a short ferry ride away from the buzz of Central,” he said.
