The Weekend Ahead: March 19 - 20

Whether you are soaking up Good Vibrations with the Beach Boys, enjoying a pint of Guinness and some Irish comedy in honour of St. Patrick, or getting active with the Hysan Fun Run, there are plenty of things to keep you busy this weekend.


All Irish Punchline Comedy Club Show

punchline The big day may have passed, but the St Patrick's Day celebrations are still going strong in the city. Laugh yourself senseless with three of Ireland’s finest stand up comedians, as the hugely popular All Irish Punchline Comedy Club Show returns for another round. Quick-witted comic Andrew Stanley is sure to have you in stitches with his audience participation, then it's over to the king of hilarious anecdotes, John Lynn. Last, but not least, is Ireland's award-winning TV star, Karl Spain. Don't miss out on the pre-show happy hour and Indian buffet. The Beach Boys with the HK Phil

The Beach Boys Wouldn't It Be Nice to dance the night away to the distinctive harmonies and catchy tunes of America's most celebrated band, The Beach Boys? Well, Don't Worry Baby because the original surfer dudes are in town. With a little help from the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, these 1960s heartthrobs will fill the Queen Elizabeth Stadium Arena with their classic tunes in a two-night bonanza. With a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, eleven Top-10 singles in just five years, and an incredible 50 years of performing under their belts, this night of Fun Fun Fun is not to be missed. Boujis Presents: Back 2 Back Fridays

boujis Boujis' monthly music battle is back for its March edition, and this time DJ Re:Flex and DJ Blaze are stepping into the ring. Funk and hip-hop are the order of the night, with DJ Re:Flex (aka Roger De Leon) championing the decks alongside the club's Saturday night resident DJ Blaze.  Operation Leprechaun II

Operation Leprechaun is back for round two, and on a mission to beat last year’s fundraising total of $15,000. Join hundreds of spritely leprechauns at Kinsale on the waterside in Kennedy Town for the first discount bundle of the day – delicious Irish stew and a pint of Guinness for just $100! Enjoy $50 Guinness and Whiskey at Solas from 3pm, and round off the day with a selection of half-price drinks at Rúla Búla, while live folk music fills the air. Leprechaun outfits will be on sale at all three participating bars for $200, with all proceeds going to LauraLynn children’s hospice in Dublin, and Hong Kong’s Love 21 Foundation.  Appreciate Hong Kong - Outdoor Music Performances

haw par music foundaiton Celebrate Hong Kong's rich heritage with an afternoon of enchanting music in the spacious PMQ courtyard, courtesy of the Appreciate Hong Kong campaign. This third installment of al fresco music events features performers from the Haw Par Music Foundation, including Anonymous Quartet (pictured), Hong Kong Children's Orff Band, and a host of other talented solo artists and groups. This newly created not-for-profit foundation envisions a tuneful future for Hong Kong, working to renovate the Haw Par Mansion, and create an accessible venue for the public to learn and preserve the art of Chinese and Western music. Handel's Semele Opera

semele Well-known classical and biblical stories will come to life this weekend in George Frideric Handel's Semele opera. Large scale chorus numbers will tell of Icarus and his fatal desire to fly to the sun, and a princess hungering for immortality, in this fine example of Handel's seamless blend of drama, conflict, and sensuality. Performed in English, under the guidance of conductor Nicholas Kok, the timeless operatic genius of this Baroque composer is an experience not to be missed. Hysan Healthy Hike and Run

hysan Dig out your running shoes and warm up those muscles because the Hysan Healthy Hike and Fun Run is back for another round. Three trails of varying length and difficulty, (5km, 13km, or 21km) will take runners through some of the most beautiful scenery Hong Kong has to offer. Organised by Hysan property developers, the community event is a great way to get the whole family up and active, with athletes of all ages welcome to take part. Registration is now closed, but we wish all runners the best of luck and look forward to cheering them across the finish line! Hong Kong Flower Show

hk flower show real one Treat your senses to an explosion of vibrant colours and fragrant aromas before the annual Hong Kong Flower Show comes to an end. Exquisite arrangements, landscape displays, and potted plants-a-plenty are just waiting to be admired, so get down to Victoria Park and feast your eyes on these beautiful gifts of nature. The Mediterranean "snapdragon" (aka Antirrhinum majus) is taking centre stage this year as the theme flower. Music performances, floral art demonstrations, and fun games are scheduled throughout the weekend, making it the perfect family outing.

Indian Holi Festival

holi festival Fancy escaping Hong Kong this weekend? Then head to Macau for the most vibrant festival in the calendar - the Holi spring festival. Guests are invited to don white clothes and shower each other with colourful powder and paint to signify the sharing of love. What better way to gather your nearest and dearest, and express your appreciation for one another? Hosted on the black sands of Hac-sa Beach, there is no doubt this shoreline will be a lot more vibrant when the Holi festival-goers have had their way!  Park Stickney Amazing Jazz Night Show

park stickney This Sunday, internationally acclaimed Jazz harpist, Patrick Stickney, is touching down in the city. Renowned for his improvisation and natural flair with the strings, Stickney will dazzle the crowd with his new collection of Chinese-inspired works that are sure to get the toes tapping. It's been over two years since he last performed in our city, and with a hectic schedule of performances across the world, and a prestigious tutor role at London's Royal Academy of Music, there is no knowing when he'll be back. The BNP Paribas Museum of Béthanie

BETHANIE Are you hungry for history? Celebrate the restoration of Béthanie, a French Mission Sanitorium dating back to 1875, with a historical tour. This Grade II historic building, now home to The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, is now open to the public, with tours in both English and Cantonese being held throughout March. Tucked away in Pokfulam, this charming collection of buildings is well worth a visit. Wander around the octagonal cowsheds, admire the breathtaking Béthanie chapel (with its replica stained glass windows, altars, and statues), and check out the epic view of the Peak from the Sir Y K Pao Studio. Make sure you visit the basement museum which showcases the history of French Missionary activity throughout Asia over the past three centuries, sponsored by BNP Paribas. Très bon! Hong Kong Space Museum Space Theatre

 M+ Sigg Collection: Four Decades of Chinese Contemporary Art

The diverse mix of paintings, sculptures, and installations trace the influence of the Cold War, globalisation, and urbanisation on the growth and development of the creative movement spanning four decades. The M+ Sigg exhibition also offers a sneak peek into the artistic offerings of the M+ museum - Hong Kong’s new hub of visual culture which opens its doors in 2019.
