It looks like it's going to be a fantastic night to welcome in the New Year with the traditional fireworks display on the harbour. The eight-minute spectacular fires off at the stroke of midnight but to warm you up, from 11:00pm look out for the "shooting stars" coming off harbourfront buildings at 15 minute intervals. As always, the real question is where to find the best viewing spots. The Hong Kong Tourism Board has listed a few prime vantage points.

Start the year Hong Kong style with a day at the races. Lucky Start January 1 is one of the Hong Kong Jockey Club's "Magnificent Race Days" so there will be special activities aimed at wishing every race goer the luckiest possible start to the year, plus a Lucky Start keyring door gift for every visitor. The major event of the day will be the historic HKG3 “Chinese Club Challenge Cup”. Racing is an 18 and over activity.

In this free event besides the harbour at Tamar Park, Yoga Union852's Adam Weirick will lead a vibrant, fun and energising 90-minute practice of alignment-based Vinyasa. All levels are welcome with beginner-friendly options for all challenging or intermediate poses. Bring your own mat.

So one of your New Year's resolutions was to improve your general knowledge and worldliness? The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) must have heard you because as part of its Appreciate Hong Kong campaign, the LCSD is offering Hong Kongers free admission to all of its sixteen museums for the entire month of January.

This weekend the Udderbelly Festival offers you something for the kids, Braniac Live, and something for the adults, Hong Kong's best-selling female stand-up comedian, Cheuk Wan Chi, affectionately known as “Ah G”.
Braniac Live is an award winning kids' TV science show brought live to stage. Expect 60 minutes of messy and loud experiments and demonstrations with audience participation.
Ah G returns to an intimate stage where she will present her highly sought after show “Call For A Drink”, which played 33 sell out performances in 2015.

Said to be "bigger, better, and with more attractions" than last year, the AIA European Carnival is bringing more of the scary rides, better fairground games such as dart throw and hoop tossing to win impossibly big fluffy animals, houses of fun and a maze of mirrors, more kids' rides plus more entertainment - thanks to their partnership with the Udderbelly festival. The AIA European Carnival is fun for the whole family and perfect for a post-holiday activity. Not being brave by any measure, we tried to get on one of the many kids' rides, but were turned away as we were without a child in tow. We settled for the chairs which turned out to be our favourite; the boppy disco tunes made the queuing very tolerable. We leave the scary stuff to you!
