Restaurant Week: Value for Money?

By Sophie Pettit 18 February 2015
This Friday, over 100 restaurants will open their doors to entice hungry Hong Kongers to take part in Restaurant Week 2015. Organised by DiningCity with the goal of bringing foodies and restaurateurs together, this is the time when restaurants can showcase their cuisine to new customers and the public can explore eateries they haven’t yet discovered. What began as a modest event backed by only 41 restaurants in the summer of 2011, has now become a big deal for foodies across the city, with more restaurants signed up than ever before. These venues hope to lure more hungry punters with special menus at fixed prices, but given some criticism that unlike other cities, Hong Kong Restaurant Week does not offer added value to customers, can this really happen? We caught up with the organisers to set the record straight. “We hope to see more people visiting Restaurant Week, we have lowered the set menu pricing to give everyone an even better value for money dining experience while maintaining the quality,” Synthia Liem, general manager of DiningCity tells Localiiz. "DiningCity has visited each restaurant to learn about their regular menus and to talk with the chefs, management, and staff to discuss how they can fit into Restaurant Week," Liem explains. "If we see the menu is not of extra value compared with the regular menu, the restaurant needs to add extras, such as an extra course or complimentary glass of wine. We always advise restaurants to upgrade their menu as we know from our experience that guests are looking for the best value menus as prices are fixed. Most restaurants are offering great value for money menus.” During the week, all restaurants will offer a minimum 3-course lunch and/or dinner menu at the following fixed prices:
Category A : Lunch $198 (was $248) / Dinner $418 (was $438) Category B : Lunch $118 (was $158) / Dinner $328 (unchanged)So what are the best picks of the week? “There are too many exciting new names on the list, but if we have to name a few we would definitely recommend 2-Michelin-starred The Principal, 1-Michelin-starred MIC Kitchen, and new participants such as Isono, AMMO, L'Altro, Steak Frites by The Butchers Club, Rosticceria Italiana Monteverdi, Bungalow, and Giando. These restaurants are very popular dining destinations normally and fully booked easily, therefore they have very limited seat capacity for Restaurant Week."
Liem recommends setting your alarm clock to be on time and ensure you don't miss out on the chance to broaden your culinary horizons. “Every edition, we see more restaurants joining and more bookings are being made and this will be the biggest edition ever, so book now." The website opens to public bookings this morning at 10am. Have a browse through some of the Restaurant Week menus below and see if anything tickles your tastebuds.
