Red China, Red Art: A Dose of Communist Spirit Comes to Hong Kong

By Localiiz 9 July 2014
July 9th 2014 With tensions between Hong Kong and the Mainland arguably simmering at their most violent since the 1997 takeover, it’s probably as good a time as any to familiarise ourselves with Communist propaganda. Later this month, Central’s Picture This Gallery will be hosting an exhibition of original vintage Chinese propaganda posters, created to cultivate the minds of the masses from the 1950s to the 1990s. Click the picture to see a selection from the exhibition:

Chairman Mao

Next   Designed to inspire and rally the people of China, the posters are bright and colorful, featuring gallant cartoon-like figures and powerful political slogans that demand their audience “Be alert!” and “Protect the country!” The illustrated scenes are undeniably glorious and triumphant; we see Mao’s face in the sky grinning down on a patriotic crowd, rosy-cheeked children studying diligently, and muscle-bound Hong Kongers armed against “British imperialist provocation”. Visit Picture This Gallery at its Queen’s Road location between July 24th and August 16th for your fix of red art. All art in the exhibition is for sale. What: Chinese Political Propaganda Posters Where: Picture This Gallery, 13th Floor, 9 Queen’s Road, Central, Hong Kong When: July 24th - August 16. Monday to Saturday 11am to 6pm. Closed Sundays and Public Holidays.
