Playground Slide at Centre of Online Petition

By Localiiz 21 April 2015
In local playground news, a children's slide has sparked hundreds of residents to sign an online petition calling for its replacement to be installed as soon as possible. The petition titled "Bring Back Our Slide" charges that in March the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) removed a slide in Hong Kong Park Playground to replace parts and that the area where the slide once stood is "now surrounded by railings." Besides the possible dangers caused by slide-less railings, it appears that children in Hong Kong may be having less fun, the empty space in the park leaving a void in their souls. "The slide was greatly appreciated by kids in the outdoor playground and there is no doubt that without it, the playground is much less fun for them," states petition organisers. Localiiz found the following video of children enjoying the slide and agree that children who use it appear to be having fun. Localiiz reached out to the LCSD and received the following response regarding the slide: "There are diversified play equipment in the children’s playground at Hong Kong Park, including slides, swings, and superscoops for public enjoyment. Since the tunnel slide was opened for public in 2001, it has been popular among park users. The LCSD has kept the tunnel slide in good shape for years. However, during a routine inspection in January this year, LCSD staff found that part of the tunnel slide was broken." The LCSD goes on to state: "To ensure public safety, the tunnel slide was closed for repairs. Notices were also posted on site to notify the public. Since the slide was produced years ago and there were no suitable spare parts for replacement and repairs, the tunnel slide had to be removed for safety sake in accordance with established procedures. We have tried to check with other suppliers and are given to understand that the same kind of slides is no longer available, yet the LCSD will continue to closely monitor the usage of the park facilities and study the feasibility for the re-provision of a suitable slide in the Park. Public may continue to enjoy other play equipment in the Park." At the time of publishing this story the petition had received over 650 signatures.
