Picture Perfect: 10 Picturesque Photographs of Hong Kong in the 50s and 60s

  We've been on quite a vintage binge as of late, but we doubt any true Hong Kongers are complaining! We've just stumbled across the work of award-winning photographer and filmmaker Fan Ho, whose photographs manage to capture an almost unreal and dreamy side of old Hong Kong. 'Private' - 1960

  Next   Ho's pictures were all taken during the 1950s and 1960s, and form part of his two major series Hong Kong Yesterday and The Living Theatre. Most of the people seen in the photographs were caught candidly, with very few images posed. "During the 50s and 60s, it was a wonderful time. Life in Hong Kong then was new, fun, and full of discovery", Ho told Localiiz. With no formal photography training available at the time, Ho taught himself with a camera manual and experimentation as his only tools. Clearly an unconventional photographer, he is at his element in bad lighting, and says back lighting - perfectly executed in many of his shots - is his go-to technique.
