In a bustling city like Hong Kong, we can sometimes find peace in the most unexpected places, and for English teacher Rebecca Joanne Allen, the
Bird Garden on Yuen Po Street is the perfect spot.
Setting off with her camera in hand, she finds sanctuary amid dozens of exotic birds, beautifully crafted bamboo cages, and sleeping stallholders.
"The Bird Garden is often just seen as a tourist destination, but I feel that it has a calm atmosphere that seems to have a lot of history behind it," Allen tells Localiiz. "As a westerner I am not used to markets like this, or animals being kept in this way so for me it is utterly different and fascinating, and sometimes hard to understand.
"There are a number of markets that are like this in Hong Kong, such as the nearby Goldfish Market and Flower Market, but the Bird Garden seems to tell more a story – from people hand making beautiful cages, to birds being blown dry!"
