People on the Streets: Portraits of Hong Kong’s Pro-Democracy Demonstrators

By Stasia Fong 5 November 2014
Photographs of Hong Kong’s Pro-Democracy demonstrators range from violent, emotionally striking shots, such as individuals being struck by tear gas, to heartwarming images of people BBQ-ing together on the streets of Central. The images capture the unity of these demonstrations and the diversity of its participants. From the elderly to the students, crowds of Hong Kongers are expressing their views. Lam Yik Fei, a successful Hong Kong journalist wanted to capture this diversity and in his series of portraits, Hong Kong’s Pro-Democracy Protestors, he presents the variety of individuals on the streets. An independent photojournalist, Lam worked for publications including The New York Times and International Herald Tribune. Getty Images and Bloomberg News Photos also distribute his work worldwide. Striving to bring awareness to the world about social, environmental, and human related issues, Lam documented the Médecins Sans Frontières in Sierra Leone and the Hong Kong poverty line.
Next   “I took this set of photos as I believe democracy is not something fought by students and activists only, but all people. After the Hong Kong Police fired tear gas on 28 September, tens of thousands of Hong Kong residents came to the streets spontaneously. They are from diverse backgrounds and ages,” Lam explained. Lam approached Hong Kong demonstrators and asked them to take part in his photography series. Meeting them on the streets of Admiralty, he explained who he was, and many of them were immediately willing to take part. “I appreciate the people who are fighting for a better Hong Kong,” Lam said.
