One to Watch: A Hong Kong Teen’s First Solo Art Exhibition

  The road to artistic fame is not an easy journey, but one Hong Kong teen is already preparing for her first solo exhibition, an elusive prospect for artists of any age. We spoke with Rainbow Tse ahead of her upcoming exhibition ‘Moments’, to find out what's behind this rising star of the art world.

Festivity

  Featuring 20 watercolour paintings of Hong Kong's urban cityscapes, Tse secured her exhibition after successfully submitting an application to Wan Fung Art Gallery’s Art Space Sponsorship programme. The talented teen was selected and will now see her work exhibited from November 14th-22nd. Even in the past month, she took part in 'Closer', the first ever miniature art exhibition held in Hong Kong.

The City Never Sleeps

  Despite Tse's recent success, she only started to develop her skills over the past few years. “I only seriously considered art and painting about three to four years ago, and watercolours in the past two years. I started learning the basic techniques; attending classes and workshops. Eventually I knew what I liked and wanted to create, and established my own style of painting from there on,” Tse explained.

  Tse’s self awareness has set her on a faster course than many other artists. At such a young age, she’s not afraid to experiment in different mediums and challenge herself, taking opportunities as soon as they arise. When asked about her participation in ‘Closer’, she doesn’t hesitate in saying that it was a definite challenge for her. “Painting in 4 x 4 inch squares was difficult but it was fun for me to paint what I normally do, in a much smaller scale. This was my first public group exhibition thanks to Art Hong Kong for kindly inviting me and for me to be part of this group event, I have met quite a few amazing artists through it.”

Golden Hour

  Unlike her previous exhibition, ‘Moments’ will focus on Tse’s personal style. Drawing influence from the impressionist movement and today’s digital landscape art, Tse aims to tell stories and evoke emotion within her work. “Each piece mainly begins with an idea or a mood, I then go around Hong Kong for inspiration and reference of architectural structures, roads. I then create my composition, play around with the perspective to the effect I aim to achieve, along with a particular colour palette.”

Still

  From her series, her favourite is the piece titled ‘Still'. "I got my inspiration while on a street waiting to cross the road, noticing the way shops lit up and created almost silhouette like figures. In the midst of this fast paced city and finding a sense of stillness, how people were standing and waiting as the cars passed was a moment I needed to capture.”

Cyber

  Tse’s advice to other young artists is practice, practice, and practice some more. “I believe once you have experimented with different forms and have the basic knowledge and technique, it is important to have a style that is original, a style that makes you the artist, different and recognizable. It is honestly a learning curve, and I am still learning and practicing to this day.” All of Tse’s work will be for sale at ‘Moments’, however she hopes to remind everyone that delivery may be delayed as she’ll still need the pieces for her University applications.
