The Carrie Lam Shownewsina

The race to find the city's next chief executive dominated headlines throughout the week. Here's a quick summary of the latest:
  • Lam admitted there would be questions over her governance if she was picked as chief executive by the Beijing-approved election committee, despite trailing behind main rival John Tsang in opinion polls.
  • Lam praised former chief executive Donald Tsang - who is currently going through a high-profile corruption case. Testifying in the case, Lam referred to Tsang as her "role model".
  • The fact that this round up is 100% Lam based shows that rival John Tsang is definitely doing a better job at keeping himself away from controversy. On that note, Lam this week turned heads when during a radio interview, she admitted that she had to make a midnight run back from a serviced apartment to her official residence for “toilet paper”. Lam said she had moved to a Wan Chai unit from her Barker Road residence, but said she found at midnight it had no toilet paper. “When I went to a nearby convenience store, I realised that they didn’t sell toilet paper ... so I had to return to my official residence,” she said.
  • Here's a picture of Carrie Lam thinking about toilet paper.

C Why???

Chief executive CY Leung revealed this week that he was moving ahead with controversial plans to develop protected country park land for housing. The decision to build more public housing is a good one - considering this administration is nowhere near its target of building 75,000 public housing flats, but building on country parks is not good. One step forward, two steps back. #niceonecy

Carry On

The ongoing saga of seized troop carriers from Singapore being held in Hong Kong came to end this week after a lot of diplomatic handbags and bitching. The vehicles were intercepted at Kwai Chung Container Terminal back in November 23, and what has followed has been an exhausting pantomime of bureaucratic paranoia and suspected espionage. Political dummy-spitting at its finest.

Liverpulled

Excitement abounds for local football fans as English Premier League giants Liverpool look set to play their first game in Hong Kong for ten years. This year's Asia Trophy - set for July - is also hoping to draw another big Premier League side by way of Southampton.

Realty Realities

The 13th annual edition of Demographia's International Housing Affordability Survey - released earlier this week - has deemed Hong Kong's real estate the least affordable in the world. Again. For the seventh year in a row. Are you surprised? Didn't think so.

Born in Hong Kong and raised in the UK, Jenny grew up with the best of both worlds. She loves just about anything to do with music and doesn’t shy away from belting out a tune or two when it comes to karaoke. If she’s not out and about exploring the city and practising her photography skills, she’s probably tucked up in bed with a book or glued to her laptop doing her online shopping.
