Look Up! New Art Installation Arrives in Hong Kong

By Localiiz 1 April 2016
Just when you thought our month of art was over, a new art sensation has arrived in town to hog the limelight! The brainchild of acclaimed Spanish artist Porqués El Grande, Volans Porcus Metropoli comprises 31 statues of naked wild boar placed in metropolitan settings around Hong Kong for us to enjoy. The life-sized boar sculptures are carefully hand carved, each from a single acorn, and all feature a set of wings to celebrate “the freedom of the city”. Each sculpture took close to a year to complete and they are notable for El Grande's attention to all anatomical detail, making close-up viewing definitely PG. Critics say the concept is simply a copy of the renowned Antony Gormley’s Event Horizon, but artist El Grande says it's the other way round. “Naked rooftop sculptures are very much part of the landscape in my hometown of Rhûn,” he explains. “I have been setting up such installations, featuring different naked animals since I was a boy. Gormley only started his exhibitions after a visit to Rhûn, and decided to focus only on the human form.” The exhibition will run for one day only, April 1, so catch it while you can!
