Long Naps, Long Life? Hong Kong Boasts World's Longest Life Expectancy

By Sophie Pettit 28 July 2016
Maybe it's practising Tai Chi in the park, hiking in the hills, or taking long daytime naps. Whatever it is, one thing's for sure - Hong Kongers are doing something right when it comes to living long and prospering. In fact, data released by Japan’s Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry this week reveals that Hong Kong’s women and men enjoy the longest life expectancy in the world. Local ladies can expect, on average, to live 87.32 years, while the average lifespan for men in Hong Kong is 81.24 years. Hong Kong women have even overtaken women in Japan, who have enjoyed the world’s longest average life expectancy since 1985 (except in 2011, when they fell behind Hong Kong’s women in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami). According to the data, Japanese women now have an average life expectancy of 87.05 years, while Japanese men live for an average of 80.79 years, dropping them from third place to fourth - after Iceland and Switzerland. Among women, Spain ranked third at 85.58 years, followed by South Korea at 85.5 years, and Switzerland at 85.2 years. A Japanese Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry spokesman said longer lifespans resulted from “progress in medical treatment and drugs” that improved survival rates for diseases like cancer. So whatever you're doing people - keep it up! Photo Credit: @illsleepanywhere
