Hong Kong Student Makes World's Top Leaders List

By Localiiz 27 March 2015
First was the cover of Time's Asia edition and now student leader Joshua Wong has been awarded another accolade by the media – being named one of the top 10 world leaders by Fortune magazine. While the list does not stick strictly to politics, including athletes, business leaders, artists, and more, it is also striking that Hong Kong's designated leader, Chun-ying Leung, does not appear anywhere on a list 50 leaders deep. In Fortune's article accompanying the list, the magazine spends column inch after column inch (perhaps a better description is pixel after pixel) to pit Wong's rise to fame through the Occupy Movement with our city's vocal disapproval of Leung.

So why did Fortune choose to include Wong and not Leung in their list? Sure, controversy sells magazines but Fortune's Geoff Colvin says that the choice was a no-brainer.

"The answer is obvious," Colvin writes. "Leung has the leader’s job, but he doesn’t have leadership. Wong is the one who demonstrated that—which is why he’s the one on our 2015 roster of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders."
