Headline Of The Week: Kinky Hong Kong Fire Service Mascot Causes a Stir

Another day, another series of nauseating news. We get it, it's difficult to keep up with all the information out there. Sometimes you watch the news and it feels like the world is spiralling out of control (kind of like a bad hangover) and you end up walking away from the TV with a banging headache. That’s why we're launching our weekly fun news column, where we give you a breakdown of the strangest and craziest headline from the past week in Hong Kong. You're welcome!

Fame is a strange thing, and the Hong Kong Fire Service Department just learned the first rule on how to claim it – you've got to do something either really stupid or incredibly weird. Well this time, they opted for the latter, with the launch of their weird and (arguably) wonderful new mascot – Anyone. Instead of opting for the obvious 'hot firemen posing shirtless' display at its press conference on Monday, the Hong Kong Fire Service Department instead gave the spotlight to an obscure blue character who proceeded to demonstrate life-saving techniques to the crowd. Although the mascot was first created in August this year, and launched onto our screens in his own music video (watch below), it wasn't until this elaborate public display that he shot to fame and went viral on the net. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=107&v=P9mWj-QMc10 Despite the bizarre appearance of the blue mascot, Anyone actually carries a serious message: that any member of the public can help in times of danger (even if that means being taught how to perform CPR from a feisty grandma. The Fire Department even made sure that Anyone carries a little extra weight to make him more relatable to the masses. Hong Kong netizens, however, are not buying it. People online have been quick to point out the resemblance between Anyone and several characters from Japanese porn, including Doctor Manhattan from the DC Comics and movie Watchmen (only not as buff), and in our opinion, the rubber suit guy from American Horror Story. We wonder if any members of the public would actually want to receive a CPR from Anyone.
