Grow Up – Adult-Only Events in HK this October

By Localiiz 3 October 2013
October 3rd 2013 Although Hong Kong is becoming increasingly family-focussed, everyone needs a break from the kids from time to time. With this in mind, we’ve compiled an eclectic selection of upcoming adult-only events, ranging in style and substance through the realms of the spiritual, physical, creative and hedonistic. Get Going Get yourself in shape and sweat it out at Elite Personal Training’s intensive boot camp from October 2nd-14th. As their trainers would say, no pain no gain! Or strike a balance between body, mind and spirit at Nia’s White Belt Training classes. By blending tai chi, yoga, martial arts and modern and ethnic dance, the Nia focuses on body-centred movements that enhance physical fitness and holistic wellness. The White Belt Training will run from October 25th to 31st.
Mind Over Matter Find flexibility, friends and spiritual strength through yoga. Join Neil Irwin for a full-day workshop on kundalini yoga at Shakti Healing Centre on October 19th, running from 2pm-6pm for HK$500. If that’s not enough, grab your mat and join other yogis at the Happy Valley Racecourse for Hong Kong Yogathon on October 27th, sponsored by Localiiz favourite T8 Fitness. Alternatively, focus on mind and meditation with Kadampa Meditation Centre’s Tuesday night 'Path to Liberation' course, held this month on October 1st, 8th and 15th. The centre will also be holding workshops on Buddha’s Sutra and Tantra teachings from 7.50pm-9.15pm on October 4th and 11th, a session exploring the practice of relying on a spiritual guide in today’s wired world on October 13th, and the ever-popular vegetarian lunch plus meditation every Wednesday. Balance your chakras and learn the power of hands-on healing with Shakti Healing Circle’s Reiki certificate class with expert Pervin Clasper. The class will be held on October 5th from 11.30am-6.30pm for HK$1,500. And if you have a crick in your back from all those long hours at the desk, Shakti Healing Circle will also be running a Total Torso Realignment session with highly praised 'Truth Speaker' author Adam Higgs from October 9th -19th. The acclaimed author will also give participants a taste of his book with short readings.
Creative Cravings It’s important to find an outlet for creativity among the humdrum of work. If you’re pining to paint and appreciate the human form, sign up for life drawing classes, running every Thursday and Saturday until November 30th at Hong Kong Art Tutoring. For a more social affair, loosen up with a glass of wine and let your creativity run free with adult classes emconpassing drawing, painting, printing and sculpting.
Booze and Cruise If painting the town red is more your style, check out the October offerings at Boujis, kicking off with Le Geek, the official Booktober event in support of charity Room to Read, on October 3rd. Enjoy a Faboujis Friday with DJ Miles Slater and DJ Gie on October 4th, Back to Boujis with DJ Blaze on October 5th and the Mad Hatter Party on October 10th. For a break from the norm, head out on the high seas with your friends and soak up the scenic views of Victoria Harbour. Have your fill of drinks and canapés for HK$550 on Hong Kong Yachting’s October 11th party cruise. Alternately, add an educational element to your drinking activities and sign up for the unique Container Port Tour on October 14th. Marvel at the mammoth container ships that ply Hong Kong waters as you learn about one of the busiest ports in the world. For something a little more private, Hong Kong Yachting’s Jungle Jane can also be booked for sophisticated dinner and wine tasting events. If you’d rather drink on dry land, work your way through the aromatized wine of St Julien’s vineyard at etc wine shop’s tasting event on October 15th from 7pm-8.30pm. And if you still can’t get enough, join a chief sommelier Mathieu Pouchan and discover the treasures from Domaine Leroy in Burgundy on October 17th from 7pm-8.30pm. Dig deeper below Hong Kong’s stereotypical nightlife and discover some new talent at The Underground HK’s showcase of fresh and veteran local bands. Rock out at the Backstage event on October 19th from 10pm. And if you’re after a new post-work haunt, head to Flutes and get merry with their fine selection of promotions, including Happy Hour every day from 5pm-9pm, Billecart Mondays for HK$95 a flute, Free flow Tuesdays from 7pm-9pm, and Ladies Night every Thursday from 5pm-9pm.
Work It Old dogs and new tricks aside, no matter what your age, you’re never too late to learn. English for Asia is running a four-week full-time teaching training course from Monday to Friday 9am-5pm. The course starts on October 7th and runs until November 3rd. There’s no doubt that tax is a complex issue for expats, but it’s about to get even more confusing for US citizens with financial interests abroad. Whether you’re planning to stay in Hong Kong for just a few years or a lifetime, new FACTA regulations are likely to affect you. Join Azure Tax at their seminar on ‘US Tax Issues for Expats’ on October 10th from 6.30pm-8pm and make sure you know the score. If you’re still to make your presence in Hong Kong official or have foreign candidates starting at your company, swat up on ‘Successful Tips to Get Your Working Visa’ in a free seminar on October 24th at Bridges Executive Centre. The session will explain the ins and outs of the Hong Kong working visa scheme from 3pm-5pm. If your brain has already entered autumn hibernation mode, unlock your inner Einstein and give your career and potential a powerful boost with PowerBrain Rx's special adult programme. The PowerBrain method uses a combination of one-on-one and digital brain training programmes to strengthen fundamental cognitive skills. Sounds intense? Give it a go at a free info session.

Lastly, a jam-packed schedule is nothing but trouble if you don’t know how to de-stress and remain balanced. Anna Mathisen's ‘Be Balanced’ workshop series at Fill in The Blank will begin on October 13th and 27th and run into November and December. The sessions will equip you with the tools you need to remain in a constant state of Zen.
