Freespace Fest 2014: Enjoy Your Art Outdoors

By Stasia Fong 20 November 2014
Hong Kong’s best weather has arrived, and what better way to take advantage of it than by heading to Freespace Fest 2014, brought to us by the West Kowloon Cultural District. Taking place on November 22 and 23rd, attendees to the free weekend event will enjoy a wide range of performances from over 200 international and local artists. We’ve already told you about M.U.R.S, an exciting smart show, but what else can you expect from this artsy, outdoor extravaganza? From music and literary arts to food and drink, Freespace Fest has it all!

Ellen Loo

Catch gigs by the various talented artists gracing the festival grounds, such as Ellen Loo, Supper Moment, SoHuman!, Tjoe Jazz Quartet, Artistrings, Heartjoe, Sensi Lion, Hak Gwai, and finally, a Bass Trio consisting of Waiting Soul from Chochukmo, Wai from Sensi Lion, and Tom Wong from Tri-deuces.

Dramatised Reading Club

Enjoy the world of Chinese literature with a variety of spoken word events. Snag a seat at the Poetry Concert, featuring poets such as Lo Sirong and Yan Jun, or hear the favourite readings in a Dramatic Reading Club. Join Playful Cantonese Poetry and hear some of Hong Kong’s most respected poets share their work. Play some delightfully intelligent literary games from the young minds of Fleurs de Lettres at Literary Ambush.

Private Dances

Dip your toes into the world of physical theatre with the multitude of shows they have to offer. Experience the crazy stunts of Australia’s coolest ensemble, Gravity and Other Myths at their acrobatic show, A Simple Space. Get ready for a thrill with s.l.o.a.p. (Space Left Over After Planning), by Brand Nebula from Sydney, Australia. Nab yourself a tent and experience Private Dances, featuring immersive live performances of all dance types.

24 Hour Pop Song

Open your mind to brand new experiences with the cutting edge programmes on offer. Bring your own headphones and dance the night away at Club 0db, clap along to Steve Reich’s famous clapping music, turn musical conducting into a game with Cobra, and listen to the avant-garde composition of Blank Angel by George Crumb. No matter what you choose, you'll leave ten times more cultured than when you came in. For a bit of family friendly fun, choose from hands-on enjoyable activities such as Tangle by Polygot Theatre, Back to Play and Poetic Babble. Even being attacked by the Giant Seagulls walking around the grounds won't stop you from enjoying the activities going on at Freespace Fest.

Farmers Market

Nosh on the food and drink on tap at the festival. There will even be a Farmers Market selling a range of local produce that you can take home to enjoy and save time getting the shopping in as well! Don’t forget to check out the Bazaar for handicrafts and artwork created by local artists.

Freespace Challenge

On top of all the activities lined up at the festival, Freespace Fest offers several apps for its attendees. Download the Freespace Challenge! mobile game app from the Apple App Store or Google Play and race against friends to the waterfront promenade. You’ve got to play it to win it! The player with the highest score will win an iPhone 6 Gold 128GB. Second place will win an iPad Mini, and the top 50 gamers will all win a tote bag.
