VIDEO: Epic Trail Running Video Takes our Breath Away

By Sophie Pettit 27 May 2016
Why I Run | A Hong Kong Trail Running Story Towering skyscrapers, heaving crowds, non-stop traffic, and relentless noise - we all want to escape the madness of Hong Kong from time to time. For born and bred Hong Konger Ben Lee, nothing takes him away more than a good run, and now he's inviting us to go with him in this breathtaking new video, Why I Run. Created by his younger brother and filmmaker Robin, the video takes us on an epic journey across land, sea, and sky, as we scale mountains, endure rainstorms, and marvel at breathtaking sunsets with our starring man. The stunning sequence, which took eleven months to capture, features sweeping landscapes, aerial shots, and golden skies, which serve as a poignant reminder of the natural beauty that lies beyond our city's man-made structures, for which it's so well known for. "My brother and I have always been drawn to the outdoors, we ski, surf, play rugby, cycle, and most of my film work is with these activities so making this video was a natural next step for me," Robin tells Localiiz. "There's so much more to Hong Kong than towering skyscrapers and crowded streets. Of course this is a trail running video at heart, but it's also a video about exploring and getting out into the wild, and seeing the ton of amazing mountains and scenery our city has to offer. All of these places are easy to get to, and we wanted to remind people that there's a whole new beauty to Hong Kong just waiting to be explored." Whether he's conquering Pat Seng Leng for the views, Hong Kong trail for the convenience, or Sai Kung for the escape, a little bit of rain is not enough to stop him in his tracks. "I've had some of my most enjoyable and memorable runs in the rain, although it's always best to avoid those days when there's lightening around," he tells us. "But as this was a personal project, we were able to wait for ideal weather conditions to get the variety of shots we wanted, which capture Hong Kong at its best. We spent a long time playing the waiting game but in the end it was worth it." We absolutely agree!
