Behind the Scenes of the City

By Localiiz 5 September 2013
September 5th 2013 See a different side of Hong Kong with French photographer Joël Odesser’s upcoming solo photography exhibition, Behind the Scenes. Held at the Art Gallery of Yew Chung International School, Kowloon Tong, between September 7th and October 11th, the dynamic and mesmerising showcase is the culmination of a four-year observation of life in Hong Kong – a pictorial exploration of how the standard of living and quality of life in our city conflict and overlap. Selected pieces from Hong Kong Lives & Lights, a parallel body of work demonstrating unusual visual experiences, will also be presented. This collection, which displays a vivid and colourful urban mood through a merger of long exposure and out of focus layers, was taken in Hong Kong’s Central district. Amid the clutter of double-decker tramways, red taxis, rushing pedestrians and advertising buses, this dense and detailed cityscape provides a dynamic contrast to the glow and glitter of the night time skyline. While Hong Kong Lives & Light represents a part of Hong Kong that can be seen with the naked eye, Behind the Scenes exposes a side of the city that can sometimes be forgotten. Each picture focuses on people routinely wandering through back alleys crammed with rusty foldable trolleys, wooden ladders, woven baskets and broken umbrellas, with the lone characters ultimately having more to tell than their entire frame itself. Trained in engineering in France, Joël developed his photography skills and portfolio while travelling across the Americas and Asia. Photography became intimately connected to his passion for travel, as he tried to freeze the memories of remote places and contrasting cultures through his images. After living in some of the world’s mega-cities, Joël developed a true interest in urban scenes. Since his first solo exhibition in Hong Kong in 2009, his photographic style has evolved artistically and his eye on Hong Kong has become sharper. Come see for yourself whether you connect with Hong Kong as seen through his viewfinder.
