An Animated Look at Hong Kong’s Future

By Stasia Fong 23 September 2014
Hong Kong’s infrastructure is arguably among the most advanced in the world. From public transportation to airport entry systems, our city is accessible and modern. Despite these advances, progress is inevitable. So how would Hong Kong look in 2044? The French Chamber of Hong Kong gave three French graphic designers that task and they created ‘Hong Kong – Wise City’, a motion graphic preview of Hong Kong’s future. Laura Eldin, a creative on the project with Timothée Bart and Antoine Caecke, tells Localiiz they imagined a cityscape very reminiscent to the style of the classic arcade game, Tron. “We wanted to create…a contrast between the hyperactive and contemplative vision on the city. One side are the streets, the lights, cars – basically the fast life in Hong Kong, compared to the life of a man who is smoking and contemplating his landscape,” explains Eldin. Rather than producing a clichéd futuristic piece focusing on ever-growing skyscrapers and flying cars, their piece delves deeper showing elements of Hong Kong’s nature and how an individual interacts with the city. It is their hope that Hong Kong’s future holds less pollution. “We wanted to show that a little bit of nature could be a solution to the pollution of the city,” Eldin says, “leading to a positive vision to what the future of Hong Kong could be.” Surprisingly, the team did not visit Hong Kong prior to making this video. Still, they included Hong Kong’s iconic skyline, the Big Buddha, and beautiful red-sailed junks. Eldin assures us that a visit to Hong Kong is in her plans and we hope it may spark a sequel to the team’s futuristic teaser. Check out more of Eldin’s work on her Behance page.
