A November to Remember – Events for All this Month

October 31st by Stasia Fong The days are passing almost as quickly as the leaves are falling, and November is already upon us. Time to put away those Halloween decorations, dust off the Christmas ornaments and ready yourself to finish 2013 in style. Whether it’s picking up a new hobby or skill, learning to appreciate the finer things in life or saying so long to the sofa and keeping off the dreaded winter weight, our compilation of the month’s best activities and events will make this a November to remember. Retail Therapy Don’t leave the Christmas shopping to the last minute. Take advantage of these November pop-up shopping events and bag some bargains for friends and family. The American Women’s Association Charity Bazaar will take place at the Hong Kong Jockey Club on November 7th. More than 100 stalls and businesses will be there, including Localiiz favourite jewellery gurus Nuage Concept. All proceeds will go to the under-privileged in Hong Kong, so shop ‘till you drop and support a great cause! Looking for the perfect shoes to go with that perfect dress for your upcoming holiday party? Head over to Polkadot Boutique’s November Pop-Up shop and design your own. Choose from more than 100 swatches, straps and heels, with a full range of sizes catering to ladies with bigger shoes to fill.  
  Culture & The Arts With Italy being a 12-hour flight away, the Dante Alighieri Society provides Hong Kongers with the easiest and cheapest way to enjoy a taste of Italy right here in the city. Show your appreciation for Italian culture this month by signing up for opera workshops with Peter Gordon on November 3rd and 16th or attending a book presentation with ‘Bel Canto Bully’ author Philip Eisenbeiss on November 15th. A Gershwin Fan? Get as close as possible to the late, great American composer with Hong Kong Philharmonic’s ‘Swire Denim Series – Gershwin Himself Plays Rhapsody in Blue' on November 15th. You’re sure to feel his presence as an automated piano plays every note exactly how Gershwin first recorded it, accompanied by the full weight of the orchestra. With a month to go before the Christmas Blockbusters hit the screens, let the Hong Kong Jewish Film Festival fill the cinematic void. Start off the season by attending the opening night in true Hollywood fashion on November 16th, with the first screening followed by the world-famous Kosher Dessert Party at The Petit Café. Continue your Jewish Film education with the He’brew Beer Night on November 17th at AMC Pacific Place Cinemas, where Big Bad Wolves will be washed down with plenty of bevvies. Next? Go see Putzel on November 21st and have your fill at the Lox and Bagels night. Put away the cheap plonk you’ve convinced yourself is palatable and turn yourself into the next Michael Broadbent. Etc wine shop is hosting several taster sessions this month, sure to arm you with a few new favourites for your next dinner party. Get a fast-track education at one of their annual wine tastings on November 21st and 23rd, where you can sample more than 100 wines from 26 prestigious wineries from the Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne regions. There will also be separate themed tasting events on November 4th, 9th 14th and 28th. If art and sculptures are more your scene, get your fix at Rouge Ephemere’s new exhibition. Influenced by Chinese Calligraphy, Jean Soyer’s Emotional Abstraction showcase perfectly personifies the melting pot of Western and Chinese culture that is so prevalent in Hong Kong.  
  Health & Fitness Sitting in an office all day can take a toll on your posture. This month Shakti Healing Circle will show you how to manage the lower back pains common among office workers. Join Dr Wong Man Chun for Part 1 on the traditional approach from 10am to 5pm on November 2nd. Make dancing and martial arts your route to wellness at Nia Hong Kong’s Dance Nia at Kamalaya classes with Tracey Fenner from November 8th to 16th. My Musical Studio also offers adult classes in ballet, jazz, hip-hop and contemporary dance, designed to fit with busy work schedules. Take a look at their After Six programme for more info. It’s better to be safe than sorry when you have little ones in the world. Elite Personal Training is offering several specials this month to help you keep off that winter weight. Baby and Me Massage HK are running courses between November 4th and 26th at Aberdeen, The Peak and Pok Lu Lam. Keep toddlers aged 1-4 busy with a bit of mess and mayhem at Artful Kids this month. Classes will be held on November 6th from 10am – 11am, November 13th from 2:30pm - 3:30pm and November 21st from 10am - 11am. Are your kids real water babies? Expose your kids to the magic of music with the help of Hong Kong Philharmonic. Head down to the Swire Sunday Family: It’s Magic event on November 11th and enjoy a range of fun activities alongside music from Harry Potter and ET. Continue their journey at My Musical Studio, where Kindermusik will spark a life-long love for music and provide solid foundations for learning. They also offer Musical Theatre and Drama classes for your little ones, installing creative self-discovery at every stage. Open your teens up to new skills and interests at the International Academy of Film and Television Hong Kong. The Teen Acting and Filmmaking Workshops will give youngsters the chance to explore some industry techniques and create their very own short film. Hollywood here we come! For kids with heat in their feet, O’Connor Barton Irish Dance Hong Kong will put them through their paces this November. New sessions are now being held every Monday from 4pm to 6pm at the CCDC studios in Wong Tai Sin.
