3 Ways to "Get Redressed" This September

By Sophie Pettit 1 September 2016
A self-confessed shopaholic and a total sucker for a bargain, I'll be the first to hold my hands up and admit that the environmental impact of my purchases isn't the first thing that springs to mind when I'm skipping around the shops. That was until I recently learnt that the fashion industry is the second most polluting the world - second only to oil - with 293 tonnes of textiles being dumped into Hong Kong's landfills alone each day. This came as a big shock to me - and my wardrobe - but luckily one organisation is working to encourages Hong Kongers to redress their relationship with their clothes and cut waste out of fashion. For the whole of September, Environmental NGO, Redress, is calling fashion lovers across Hong Kong to join in their citywide series of sustainable fashion focused events throughout the month to coincide with HKTDC’s ‘Hong Kong in Fashion 2016’ and ‘CENTRESTAGE 2016’. There are multiple ways to get involved, from donating unwanted clothes to the public clothing drive, grabbing a bargain at one of the second-hand pop-up shops around town, attending a free panel discussion about the latest industry trends in sustainable fashion, and last but not least - a screening of Redress’ new documentary, Frontline Fashion, to see the developments from young designers’ perspectives. Redress will also be taking this opportunity to showcase some of the city’s most promising sustainable emerging designers at the EcoChic Design Award Alumni Showcase. And if that isn't enough to make you fall in love with better fashion this month, we don't know what is. Here's how you can get involved ...

1. Clear Your Closet for a Cause

Stop rolling your eyes, we know it's a chore - but if anything is worth the effort of rooting through your wardrobe and taming those overflowing drawers, it's charity. Your quality clothes, shoes, and accessories will be given a new, loving home by local charities, while designer and quality high street pieces will be set aside for the Redress Pop-up Shops to raise money for the global charity's continued efforts to further the environmentally-friendly fashion industry. If you find yourself having a mild mid-morning breakdown, and wondering if a bomb has hit your home, just remember - you're helping to save the planet!
