Popcorn and Opinions: November 6th

November 6th 2014

We saw our first scarf today and that can only mean that turkey time with all the trimmings is around the corner. To celebrate this auspicious event, our in-house movie expert, Howard Elias, is here to fill you in on the latest crop of pre-holiday films that are at our cinemas this week.

Opening November 6th

The most anticipated film of the season has finally landed. Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) stars as a former pilot turned farmer who is recruited by NASA to fly through a wormhole in space and establish a new colony in a galaxy far, far away. At just under three hours in length, this could have seemed like an interminable journey but director Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight series, Inception, and many others) is an ace when it comes to combining nifty special effects with a fairly plausible storyline. Enjoy the ride!

Showing at the AMC, Broadway, and UA (IMAX) cinemas.

The World of Kanako

Fresh from its well-deserved Best Actor win (Koji Yakusho, who also starred in Shall We Dance) at the Sitges International Film Festival, The World of Kanako tells the story of a former detective who goes searching for his missing daughter but soon discovers that she has a mysterious secret life. The film is relentlessly violent and often shocking but fascinating to watch nevertheless.

Showing at the AMC, Broadway, Grand, and UA cinemas.

Still at the cinema

The most hyped movie of the fall season, Fury tells the story of a battle-hardened army sergeant (played by Brad Pitt) who commands a Sherman tank and its five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines during the closing days of World War II. I was expecting this film to be a real clunker but it was okay. I don’t think the war lasted as long as the film though.

Showing at the AMC, Broadway, and UA (IMAX) cinemas.
