Not a fan of traditional Christmas pudding but looking for a sweet treat to round off your Christmas dinner this year? Don’t worry, because My Little Hong Kong Kitchen food blogger Laura Williams has the perfect recipe to win over your heart (and stomach) this holiday season. Chocoholics rejoice — it’s a festive Chocolate Orange Mousse.
It’s no secret that my favourite food combination is chocolate with orange. I love it, I mean really love it. As a cook and food blogger, I love to experiment with different flavours, but I always seem to come back to this one! As I’m not the biggest fan of Christmas pudding (don’t judge me), I’ve come up with an alternative dessert that is light, airy, and full of chocolate orange flavour. This is a lovely way to finish a meal and it’s a real crowd-pleaser. The best part is, it can be made the day before and kept in the fridge, so it’s ready to eat with no last minute fuss. Enjoy!
Chocolate Orange Mousse
70g dark chocolate (70% cocoa)
2 medium eggs
- Melt dark chocolate in a bowl over a pan of simmering water. To this, add the zest of one orange and squeeze in the juice of half of this orange. If the chocolate splits at any point, add in a spoonful of boiling water and stir quickly. Stir the orange through the chocolate and take off the heat when completely melted.
- Separate the eggs. Whisk the egg whites until you get very soft peaks and then add 1tbsp of sugar. Continue to whisk until you get glossy, soft peaks, and set aside.
- Beat the remaining egg yolks and quickly mix into the melted chocolate mixture. Take one third of the whipped egg whites and beat into the chocolate to loosen the mix. Finally, gently fold in the remaining whites using a metal spoon, taking care not to over mix, and spoon the mousse into a serving glass or bowl. Refrigerate overnight or for at least 3 hours until the mousse has set.
