New revitalised art mall 618 Shanghai Street is open for business!

With the Year of the Rat almost upon us (and shopping being one of the things you absolutely must do to bring about good fortune), we’re setting our sights on brand-new art mall 618 Shanghai Street, a revitalised 14-building strip in Mong Kok specialising in local businesses and handicraft brands!

Back in 2008, the Urban Renewal Authority started the revitalisation project on Shanghai Street, which involves renewing 14 traditional Hong Kong tong lau (tenement buildings). 10 buildings were built before the war in the 1920s and classified as Grade II historic buildings, and the rest was built in 1960s. To preserve the historical feel of the buildings, the exteriors were kept intact, including the iconic main columns supporting the architecture and signages. Local artists were also invited to repaint the walls to add an element of modernity to the ageing complex. The revitalisation project has recently been completed and is now open to the public.

Boasting a total of five floors spread across 618 Shanghai Street, local speciality stores such as Midwest Vintage, Bunkaya Zakkaten, Chang Chang Goodstore, Wai Chi Street Playground, and more have taken up residence, making it a one-stop-shop destination for those looking to add Hong Kong-inspired items to their homes and lives. That’s a whole range of stationery, local goods, handicrafts, and fashion items to choose from! If your feet start aching from browsing around this vintage and handicraft heaven, there are also restaurants in the basement, on the fourth floor, and on the rooftop. Make sure to keep an eye out right here for announcements on new openings!
