The days are passing almost as quickly as the leaves are falling, and November is already upon us. Time to put away those Halloween decorations, dust off the Christmas ornaments and ready yourself to finish 2013 in style. Whether it’s picking up a new hobby or skill, learning to appreciate the finer things in life or saying so long to the sofa and keeping off the dreaded winter weight, our compilation of the month’s best activities and events will make this a November to remember.

Retail Therapy

Don’t leave the Christmas shopping to the last minute. Take advantage of these November pop-up shopping events and bag some bargains for friends and family.

The American Women’s Association Charity Bazaar will take place at the Hong Kong Jockey Club on November 7th. More than 100 stalls and businesses will be there, including Localiiz favourite jewellery gurus Nuage Concept. All proceeds will go to the under-privileged in Hong Kong, so shop ‘till you drop and support a great cause!

Culture & The Arts

With Italy being a 12-hour flight away, the Dante Alighieri Society provides Hong Kongers with the easiest and cheapest way to enjoy a taste of Italy right here in the city. Show your appreciation for Italian culture this month by signing up for opera workshops with Peter Gordon on November 3rd and 16th or attending a book presentation with ‘Bel Canto Bully’ author Philip Eisenbeiss on November 15th.

A Gershwin Fan? Get as close as possible to the late, great American composer with Hong Kong Philharmonic’s ‘Swire Denim Series – Gershwin Himself Plays Rhapsody in Blue‘ on November 15th. You’re sure to feel his presence as an automated piano plays every note exactly how Gershwin first recorded it, accompanied by the full weight of the orchestra.

With a month to go before the Christmas Blockbusters hit the screens, let the Hong Kong Jewish Film Festival fill the cinematic void. Start off the season by attending the opening night in true Hollywood fashion on November 16th, with the first screening followed by the world-famous Kosher Dessert Party at The Petit Café. Continue your Jewish Film education with the He’brew Beer Night on November 17th at AMC Pacific Place Cinemas, where Big Bad Wolves will be washed down with plenty of bevvies. Next? Go see Putzel on November 21st and have your fill at the Lox and Bagels night.

Put away the cheap plonk you’ve convinced yourself is palatable and turn yourself into the next Michael Broadbent. Etc wine shop is hosting several taster sessions this month, sure to arm you with a few new favourites for your next dinner party. Get a fast-track education at one of their annual wine tastings on November 21st and 23rd, where you can sample more than 100 wines from 26 prestigious wineries from the Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne regions. There will also be separate themed tasting events on November 4th, 9th 14th and 28th.

If art and sculptures are more your scene, get your fix at Rouge Ephemere’s new exhibition. Influenced by Chinese Calligraphy, Jean Soyer’s Emotional Abstraction showcase perfectly personifies the melting pot of Western and Chinese culture that is so prevalent in Hong Kong.
