8 Quirky Ways to Celebrate Valentine’s Day

Whether you are loved-up, single, or just love an excuse to spoil yourself, there are loads of fun ways to celebrate the cheesiest day of the year in our city. But here at Localiiz, we like to do things a little differently, so we say ditch the clichés this Valentine’s Day and try something out of the ordinary for a quirky night to remember.

1. Declare Your Love – Underwater

ocean park

Ocean Park is pulling out all the stops to give lovers an aquatic love affair to remember with this hilarious, cheesy stunt. Sign up for their Valentine’s Day Get Closer to the Animal Special Package and you can not only get up close with penguins in the romantic themed Penguin Encounter, but also enjoy dinner for two as divers present customised love messages to you from inside the tank. Let’s just hope they don’t get attacked by the sharks in the process – now that would really kill the mood!

Those of you looking to take your adventure under water might also be keen on the Nighttime in the Ocean’s Depths Special where you can take an evening stroll in Polar Adventure, have a tour of Shark Mystique, and feast on dinner and breakfast. Or why not skip straight to the food at Neptune’s Restaurant and enjoy a slap-up six-course Heartfelt Valentine’s Day dinner by candlelight. After feasting, you can add even more magic to your night and delve into the Love After Dark Tour in the Grand Aquarium for an extra $300 (for two). It’s all happening at the aquarium!

When: February 14
Where: Ocean Park, Aberdeen, Hong Kong, (+852) 3923 2323
How much: Valentine’s Day Get Closer to the Animal Special Package ($5,128 for two), Nighttime in the Ocean’s Depths Special ($3,160 for two); Heartfelt Valentine’s Day set menu ($2,088 for two)

2. Make Chocolate

chocolate

Valentine’s Day or not, we all love an excuse to gorge ourselves senseless on chocolate, and Sesame Kitchen couldn’t agree more. They are inviting you to get your hands dirty in the best possible way at their Valentine’s Day Raw Chocolate Making Class. Join raw food chef Shima Shimizu in the kitchen and learn how to make delicious and healthy (yes, healthy) choccies. Her secret ingredients hold the key to creating low-sugar, antioxidant-packed treats that even vegans can enjoy. Better still, you will make enough chocolates to take some home in a gift box for your loved one (or yourself – we won’t judge). The workshop is suitable for all ages, but spaces are limited, so book now to avoid missing out.

When: February 13, (2pm – 4pm)
Where: Sesame Kitchen, 21/F, Yiuga Factory Building, No.62 Victoria Road, Kennedy Town, (+852) 2884 1299
How much: $680 per person

3. Run the Ultimate Direction Valentine’s Race

race

So your New Year’s resolution was to get more exercise? Perhaps spend more time with your loved one? Well, now’s your chance to tick both off the list because The Ultimate Direction Valentine’s Race is coming to town and there’s still time to sign up. Organised by Lantau Base Camp, the race challenges partners to complete a 13km trail on South Lantau Island, starting at Nam Shan Picnic Area. Racers must complete the entire course as marked, and teams that don’t follow the markers will be disqualified – so no cheating lovebirds! There are three different categories to choose from: 2 male, 2 female, or mixed teams of 2 – and did we mention there are prizes for the best fancy dress? Good luck!

When: February 13, (9.30am start)
Where: Race start/finish is Nam Shan Picnic Area on South Lantau Road
How much: $360 per team

4. Dine in the Dark

alchemy

If you’re a sloppy eater, then this is the perfect date spot for you. Ditch your go-to restaurant – and the lights – and dine in complete darkness at Alchemy. Let one of the restaurant’s visually impaired waiters (or ‘guides’) escort you both through the dark doorway to your table where you will tuck into a delicious four-course Valentine’s Day dinner in pitch black. Sharpen your senses as you try and guess what you are eating – without making a complete mess. With seating for only 32 people, and a strict “no mobile phones” and “no light pollution” policy, this quirky little venue provides the perfect intimate setting to bond in the abyss. Just make sure you don’t wear white!

When: Open Tuesday to Saturday (7pm – 11pm)
Where: Alchemy in the Dark, LG/F, 16 Arbuthnot Road, Central
How much: Set menu for two costs $1,888 plus 10% service charge (includes 2 glasses of champagne)

If you are the creative types, then you will love art jamming at Paint Palette. Located in the heart of Causeway Bay, this little art studio provides the perfect setting for you and your muse to while away the hours in relaxed and comfortable surroundings. For a set price, you can choose a canvas of your preferred size, all the acrylic paints you will need, and a complimentary soft drink to keep your creative juices flowing for up to four hours. If you fancy something a little stronger, then you are welcome to bring along your own alcohol, and the staff will even let you play your own cheesy playlist to set the tone as you paint away. Be sure to call ahead and book your easels side by side.

When: Open Monday to Sunday (open by reservation)
Where: 3/F, 530-532 Jaffe Road, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong

All the food is cooked and served to you fresh on the boat, meaning you can steer clear of the city’s bustling restaurants and lap up the romantic atmosphere of the harbour during your evening at sea. Boats are limited, so book ahead.

For one night only, their Special Valentine’s Day Show features seven of the city’s cheekiest comedians who are guaranteed to make you chuckle. With a BYOB policy, this venue is a great spot for anyone with a wicked sense of humour. Just make sure you don’t sit in the front row – you’ve been warned!

Totally worth braving the allergies for!
