It seems foursquare has added ratings to their system, directly competing with Yelp. Not much of an issue in Hong Kong as yelp hasn't arrived here yet, but it's definitely an interesting one to watch..

If Yelp would come to HK it would gain some huge success, considering a LOT of people have an iPhone and it's integrated into Apple Maps.

I do prefer foursquare though, it's a good way of discovering new places and it's fun to see where your friends have been.

Here's an interesting following up question for you - which would you use more: Localiiz or Yelp? (and why!)

It's hard to compare actually, I don't see Localiiz as a way to find new places or recommend places, Yelp and Localiiz are two totally different services.
Does Localiiz even has something to search for new places based on different criteria? Or even just based on your location?

By places do you mean locations (e.g. Lantau) or new/interesting businesses?

Probably both, I mean, look at Foursquare, it's build to discover new places, I just don't see that over here.
It would be nice to see something specific for HK though.

Interesting - Localiiz is all about helping people find new and interesting small/medium sized businesses (you can see all the categories at the top of the page). None of the listings on the site are from businesses in malls so there should definitely be some things for you to discover :)

Maybe the site is just not at a point yet where I would actually use it to discover places.

The way it is now is basically just a list of places, it's not made to find new and interesting places, say I want to find a restaurant that serves meat on HK Island, how would I do that?
Or I'm walking around in Mong Kok and want to get some lunch, how would Localiiz offer me a way to find something new and interesting nearby?

That's the way I would use Foursquare, just open up the app and check what's nearby, or search for something new.

Have you guys come across this new site that lets people write reviews on businesses in Hong Kong? It is suppose to be a Yelp alternative, It's called HK Voice and it's pretty useful I think. Definitely a one to look out for.

I hadn't seen it before - interesting site, although it seems like quite a few businesses on there have out of date info

    Replying to #11

A lot of directories in Hong Kong I have come across are all pretty much out of date. I do find HK Voice useful coz it's like a simple version of Yelp. Gets straight to the point.
